There’s no denying that I’m a bit jaded when it comes to Austria. Ten years (!!!) of coming back and forth have led me to stop noticing some things and take them for granted. That’s why it was fun for me to read a blog entry by a woman in Holland who’s recently returned from a ski vacation in Tyrol.
Check out the romance and wonder:
The whole dreamy scene that leaped right in front of me seemed like a winter re-incarnation of some alpine dairy commercial that I once saw on TV back home in the Philippines. No wonder my sister in law loved Austria, she found what she has been missing all along in flat and jam-packed Holland.
Um, yeah. It is really pretty. There’s no denying that. Yeah. Okay.
Also, there’s some funny stuff about sorting your rubbish. It has taken years for me to get this right. Many a time has Euro-husband pulled something out of our immaculately washed garbage only to throw it somewhere else.
Anyhoo, have a read.
Hey Pam,
Thanks for the visit and the spotlight!
Austria is indeed very lovely. I am still suffering from some sort of Austrian surrealism case. Every time I look out the window, I was hoping to see the flawless tapestry of snow, the white alpine peaks and the refreshing pine trees. Instead, I see nothing but grey skies and flat flat land.
We also segregate rubbish here in Holland, but like what you’ve said, not as immaculate as your trash bin!
Cheers,
It doesn’t hurt that our winter this year is all about early snow and lots of it.
I have to say that a winter of this makes my eyes crave colors beyond white. I’m always stunned when I see flowers again in the spring. But that brightness is a very good reason to trade a Seattle winter – which is much like a Holland winter, I think – for an Austrian winter.
