From the Archives: Vanillekipferl

Every winter, my mother in law sets herself to baking vast quantities of Christmas cookies. There are Linzer Augen and Schneehaubenkekse and Nutella Brownies and Butter Cookies and Lebkuchen and Meringues and and and….there is a broad variety and they keep coming. There are a few family favorites, the Schneehaubenkekse and the Vanillekipferl are certainly the most popular with Mr. NEV.

When he arrived in early December, one of the items he unpacked from his luggage was a large tin packed with the aforementioned cookies. But he’s a bit of a sweet-tooth and by today, they were all gone. He emailed the family and they sent the recipe and today, we cranked out a big batch of Vanillekipferl.

A Vanillekipferl is a crescent shaped cookie that’s tossed in powdered sugar. Ours were made with hazelnuts. When they’re right out of the oven, they’re a little crispy, after they’ve sat for a while they get a little chewy. Both ways are excellent – it’s a matter of preference. Mr. NEV doesn’t discriminate; I have a slight preference for a cookie that comes right out of the oven.

Austrian Baking

I’ve been pitching in to help with the Austrian baking for a few years now – this year is the first year we’ve made them solo in our Seattle home. Right now, our kitchen smells like baking and the cookie tin is refilled with Vanillekipferl. It’s almost like a little Austrian Christmas. Time to put on some coffee.

The Taste Test

How are they?

Perfect!

Perfect!

  1. They look delicious. They will probably be gone by tomorrow once Santa Claus has dipped his fingers into the cookie tin. Vanillekipferl are also a favourite in our household, along with the marzipan almond towers.

  2. They have the cookies here too. They’re nice and all, but nothing compares to warm chocolate chip for me. Anyway, who’s looking at the cookies? Mr. NEV is very fine to look at himself! Also, glass cabinet doors are brilliant. ALSO: COLOR in the kitchen is quite nice for the eyes.

  3. Yummy! I’ve been the laziest baker ever…haven’t made cookies in YEARS. (You’d think reading about everyone’s holiday baking would put me in the mood…but oddly, no…too busy eating what everyone else baked for us.) 😉
