On Living Near Water

Low Tide at Lincoln Park

The tide was out late this morning when we headed down to Lincoln Park. It takes about 15 minutes to get there from our front door, though because it’s uphill on the way back, it takes a lot longer to get home.

The rocky verge at the edge of the sound was full of giant orange and purple starfish, crabs, and sea cucumbers. I know I’ve mentioned how ecstatic I am to be living walking distance from such a majestic body of water, but I’m not sure I have the vocabulary to really express the absolute wonder I feel when, a mere wander from my house, I can see starfish and sea critters that are the color of the setting sun.
Coleman Pool, Just Before Opening

Also, because it’s summer, or June, at least, the pool is open! I have a long relationship with swimming pools. Coleman pool (also walking distance from my front door) is a real miracle of a place. A girl could find the inner swimmer she lost touch with at a pool like Coleman. What a beauty.

Here’s an essay I wrote some time back – it’s sort of a personal history of swimming. I included it in my compilation, Baked Insanity. Trivia note: This is one of the first pieces I wrote in Austria for Nerd’s Eye View.

  1. I love having an outdoor pool nearby. Second Beach pool in Stanley Park is a few blocks from my place and I’ve been going almost every day. My goal is to swim 100km before the end of summer!
