With my center of gravity shifted to the south, places that were heretofore unknown to me are no longer filed under “There be monsters here.” It’s not unusual to find me tucking into a bowl of pho in White Center or a plate of Chinese food in Burien. There’s a whole land of edibles towards the warmer southern latitudes of Seattle. Plus, everyone knows the best Indian food isn’t in the city, it’s on the East side or,wow, in downtown Renton at Naan-n-Curry, go figure.
We started with the paneer pakoras. The panneer is lightly battered and fried and served dusted with maybe some kind of masala and cayenne spices. It’s delicious with the mint sauce. Yum. We had several paneer dishes – I love this stuff – including the palaak paneer (spinach with paneer) and the tandoori paneer. Delicious, all of it. We also had the bagnan bartha (eggplant), the gobi gosht (cauliflower, potatoes, peas) and two meat dishes – a chicken korma and a bhindi gosht (lamb with okra). I didn’t try the lamb and the chicken was merely mediocre, but all of the veggie dishes were rich and complicated and aromatic. The eggplant was a little on the salty side, but still quite tasty. The naan bread was fluffy and fresh (though Taste of India in the University district still has the best naan ever).
The most expensive thing on the menu is the prawn biriyani (oh, my, I have to go back!) but most of the dishes are between 8-12 dollars. The food is, well, it’s amazing. My mouth was really happy by the time I was done, as was my belly. The staff is friendly and the service is totally fine. Plus, the restaurant is right across the street from a whopping great western wear store. You can stuff yourself with delicious curry and then go shopping for shirts with pearl snaps. That’s my idea of a perfect afternoon.
Naan-n-Curry is at 709 South 3rd in downtown Renton. They have a website, here. And for no good reason other than I like it, here’s a picture of the sky in downtown Renton.
