A guy with a ferret. The ferret is curious and friendly and wears a red harness. The guy flirts with the West 5 booth girl. It seems to be going well.
A band named Awesome and yeah, they are, kind of, in a perfect nerdy way. Swell harmonies, funny, weird lyrics about shapes and numbers and what? What are they saying? Little kids are totally digging the poppy music and hipster parents look delighted. (Look out, TMBG.)
A frosty cold Manny’s Pale Ale on the West Five sidewalk. A front row seat for people-watching and eavesdropping. “So you have dual citizenship? Chinese, right?” “No, it would be British, it was before Hong Kong went back to China.” “Feminism is a dirty word now, you know?” (In a fake Southern accent) “Well exCUSE me for not getting a rich husband so I can just stay home!”
A piece of roasted corn, too hot to eat at first, with butter and salt and Parmesan cheese. Before that, a slice of pizza and after, a brownie from the best bakery ever.
A new neighbor recognizes you before you recognize her. Her companion, a tall, friendly guy who wonders if he should get bubbles for the party.
Teenagers, lots of them, in small groups and larger ones. The girls in celebrity sunglasses, the boys in ironic t-shirts for bands that were popular 20 years ago. Many of them are talking on cell phones as they promenade.
A girl in black with multiple facial piercings and lots of tattoos. In her arms, a black and white miniature boxer. The boxer is wearing one of those cones to keep it from chewing on injuries. The white plastic of the cone is decorated with skulls and crossbones and other gothy symbols.
Dogs, dogs, dogs. Leashed and well behaved, all of them. Golden retriever, basset hound, black lab, black lab, black lab, dachshund, corgi, beagle…there’s no barking, even when they encounter each other.
Wheels. Bicycle, skateboard, roller skate, stroller, wheelchair. A very tall guy in a cowboy hat, baggy shorts and no shirt weaves through the crowd on his long board with surprising grace.
Summer Fest is on all weekend.
