Last night I went out to dinner with the cutest baby on the planet. No really, you should see him, you’d agree. Anyway his moms (you read that right) are friends of mine and they have this yummy little boy. Off we went to the Kingfish Cafe on Capitol Hill where young Baby D charmed the waitress senseless. If he holds on to that kind of style, charm, and eyelashes to die for, hearts are going to break. Hard.
Kingfish serves up righteous soul food and doesn’t skimp on the butter. I had the crab cakes, a tasty mix of crab and catfish with a little cajon spiced dipping sauce. It came with a giant, I mean enormous baked yam and a not so giant but certainly enough serving of cole slaw. I do love crab cakes and it was Fish Wednesday. I happily washed it down with a Nut Brown Ale but later that night I woke up thirsty as all get out, probably from the salt in a Fish Wednesday not of my making. I am determined to make crab cakes at home some day soon, when I have windows that open in my kitchen so I may fry with impunity, or at least with the understanding that my house will not stink of fish frying forever.
Aside, the new windows come soon, in just about a week, so can crab cakes be far behind?
While I was feeling very satiated from the fine feed (and dosed up on cute from the company of Baby D), I did miss prepping my own fish feed at home. I wanted something light and simple and wholesome to counteract the overindulgence of Southern Fried Goodness, so off I went to the market to pick get some sole of another spelling.
The young man behind the counter was trimming salmon but stopped to pack up a pound of this very light (and, btw, very cheap) fish. Sole doesn’t have a lot of character, but filled on substance (and yam fries) from the night before, I was okay with that. I poached the fish in a little white wine and the juice of half a lemon and dished it up over wild rice and steamed spinach. It was a very plain meal, ridiculously easy to make, and hit the spot. Sometimes you want something simple, even on Fish Wednesday Thursday.
Today’s Fish Wednesday shout out goes to Tuckova for turning me on to the Fishkini. That’s right, a bikini made from Tilapia leather. I’m torn. Tilapia is overfished in regions that are manufacturing Tilapia leather, but wow, they sure are making the most out of the fish. Plus, I can’t help it, I kind of want a fish skin wallet. Is that wrong of me? Also, does swimming in a fishkini make you a super fast swimmer or does it just piss of the fish?
