Strawberry Cheesecake

Cheesecake

I have been very sad lately.

First there was the seemingly unnecessary departure from Hawaii just when it was starting to get good.  I lie. It was good from the day we arrived and it wasn’t totally unnecessary to return to the mainland, after all, a person has to earn money, not just spend it. I was blue on the plane on the way home and it did not help that we returned to perfectly awful weather. That’s moderated a little, though according to our local weather guru, the June gloom is on the way. What I’m saying is that we were in Hawaii and then we weren’t, and it hasn’t yet turned to the time of year when Seattle is the most perfect place on the planet. It will, it does that every year just so you won’t leave in a snit.

The second reason I’ve been sad is that the other half of NEV is decamping for the foreign office for rather too long for my liking. Admiring readers with romantic aspirations may wish to take this as an opportunity to hit on me though I’d like to assure you that you would be wasting your time. I am as faithful as an old beagle and more surprised by that than anyone else could possibly be.

I realize that the best thing for a massive case of the blues is exercise and sunshine, but there are times when the only thing to do is apply high quality baked goods. I will spare you my usual lurid poetry about our local bakery and tell you that now that things are a bit springier, there are fruit tarts and cheesecake to be had at Bakery Nouveau.  If you were going to hit on me, undeterred by my claims of fidelity, you could invite me for treats there. I would probably swoon over you just a little bit, but only because you would be showing remarkable common sense in your appreciation for some of the finest baking this side of the Atlantic.

For the record,  the cheesecake is lovely, but I found the chocolate cookie crust a bit too intense, overwhelming the more subtle taste of the strawberry. I think I’d like it on a slightly less powerful crust, maybe a ginger snap or classic graham cracker? No matter, it’s not like it wasn’t amazing, flaws and all. You should go, preferably on a nice day, snap up a sidewalk table, and get something delicious.

Bakery Nouveau is at 4737 California in West Seattle. Skip the Sunday crowds and go for kaffeehaus hours, Vienna style, weekday afternoons around three. It’s easier to get a table, it’s less noisy, and there are still plenty of amazing things to choose from in the bakery case. Call me, I’ll meet you there.

  1. Bakery recovery. What a cool concept.

For me, when I come back to our area, I’m big on doing the favorites thing to regroup. It really doesn’t matter what cool places I ate at when gone, nothing like the local peeps you know.

    Mouth watering post.

  2. the judicious application of deliciousness is always appreciated. I’d love to take a spin out there and try some delectable snacks and watch you hold up your mega admirer-be-gone shield as disappointed wouldbe mates are defeated.

July’s just around the corner. Wonder what the weather will be like then?

  3. Hey, maybe you can help me. I’m going to Ohahu next months for a conference and snagged 5 days of playtime. I don’t want to stay in Honolulu but really seem fuzzed brain about where to stay or how to pick a rental. Or what the heck to do besides the most important thing – wind down. Suggestions oh great traveled one?

Oh, and I’ll also be at Folklife. A bunch of us online folks from the Well will be at Sunday’s band scramble to remember a friend who passed last month.
