- The sound of the surf.
- Hearing the drivers, bellboys, staffers here and there say “Mucho gusto” after we’ve been chatting for a while and they decide to introduce themselves. Charmers, everywhere.
- In the hotel lobby, the ten piece Latin band in matching shirts and the South Indian family dancing.
- Watching three huge dark birds — cormorants? — fly across the water early this morning.
- Watching the tugboat tend to the freighter that’s just off shore.
- The mango mojito I had with dinner last night.
- The charm of the people I’ve interacted with so far. I genuinely enjoyed the company of the hotel marcomm gal and the spa manager last night, they were fun. Really! Sometimes those PR dinners can be a real drag and last night, that was absolutely not so.
- “Chicken Pizza” Snork.
Things I’m less than crazy about:
- The way Spanish is a second language. I’m in your country and you’re apologizing to ME because you can’t find the English word? Knock it off.
- The loud plumbing from next door (or was it upstairs?) last night around 1am. And the noise from the hallways. (This is a problem in a LOT of hotels, I’ve found.) Sorry, Marriott. The room and the view are lovely and the bed oh so comfortable, but wow, that’s some noisy plumbing.
- My coffee, this morning. Plus, how come it’s a latte and not a cafe con leche? Admitted? I’m so not used to the rich taste of whole milk.
- The missing tour company. Well, I’m pretty sure they weren’t missing, but my name was missing from their list. Oops. Scheduling mishap! All fixed! Off to go snorkeling, Chicken Pizza tomorrow (Sunday).
Can’t wait to hear your report re: Chichen Itza. I’ve not been, but I was just at Ek Balam, and I’d recommend that Maya site for your return visit to the Yucatan. I *know* you’d love getting off the beaten path on the peninsula:

They didn’t tell you that Cancun is an extension of the US? Everything for your American comfort! Including lattes! (:()
Outside of Cancun it’s Spanish AND Mayan. When you get to Chichen you’ll see it in the signage on site. I was astonished to hear Mayan spoken when I was on the peninsula, considering that we are taught that the Mayan language is dead as a doornail.
Are you just hanging around the Cancun area for the most part? We got married a year ago in Tulum, which is a hour or so south of Cancun. It is beautiful down there.
Mango mojitos sounds good. The classic mojito is one of my all time favorites and adding mango to anything instantly makes it better.
You have to come to Peru and sample a passionfruit sour. Best drink in the world.
