Antarctica Gear Test v1.0

I’m wearing:

  • A very old hat given to me by a friend shortly before I moved to Seattle. “It’s COLD up there.” Uh, it’s not Alaska. But thanks?
  • A raincoat from the Tschibo in Austria. It’s got a lightweight zip in fleece vest. It’s soon to be retired.
  • Outdoor Research mitts: I’ve had them forever. They’re waterproof and have removable liner mits, too.
  • Bogs boots: I love these things. Get yourself a pair, they’re so great. And they’re adorable.
  • Zip front fleece from, uh, er, I don’t even remember where.
  • Outdoor Research Enigma Pants: Goretex, taped seams, built in gaiters, serious weatherproofing — but no insulation. Provided by Outdoor Research.
  • Jeans, a really old pair of polypro long-johns, and a silk thermal shirt from REI.
  • Merino wool hoody and socks — provided by Icebreaker.
  • Kata backpackthat holds my DSLR and gadgety crap I carry around with me.

  1. Looks good! Text says, mission mostly accomplished – is anything notably missing?

I like fleecy neck gaiters, better than scarves at staying put and they protect your face below the sunglasses. Also, consider clear glasses/goggles for eye protection when it’s both overcast and windy.

    • The neck gaiter, I need to get one of those. Nothing was notably missing, but my jacket didn’t really keep me warm — my back was cold when the wind was against it and the two pairs of socks? Too tight, so the circulation in my feet wasn’t that great.
