- I wrapped up my cake series over on Gadling with this short expose about Vienna’s iconic Sachertorte.
- Podcast producer Katy Sewell came over while my friend Jessica Spiegel was in town — Katy interviewed both of us about freelancing and expat life. Spoiler alert: I was an unhappy expat.
- My friend Alex asked me to throw in on a piece he was writing about overlooked destinations in Europe. My choice? Graz, Austria.
- It took us a while to figure some things out, but we finally got the band back together. Our first gig with Phil, our new bass player, will be at this summer’s Northwest Folklife Festival.
- In a spectacularly bad planning move, I seem to have developed my writing community in the Bay Area. That was stupid. I’ll be reading at Weekday Wanderlust on May 19th in San Francisco. Please come.
- Sort of related and later on the calendar, I will again be teaching at the Book Passage Travel Writers Conference in Corte Madera this August. I teach a class in how to not do any of the things that are supposed to make you successful on the web while still ending up as one of those people labeled as influential. Okay, that’s not entirely true. What I really do is teach aspiring travel writers not to fear technology and how it can help their careers. In a media sector that’s overrun with marketers, this conference exalts the literary side of travel writing and I’m happy when I’m there. Email me if you want to know more about it.
